Description / Rhubarb root 250g
Rhubarb is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Polygonaceae family and growing in Europe and Asia. It looks similar to celery, except for its bitter flavor . Rhubarb is characterized by vertical ribs with large leaves at the tips, generally green, fading from yellow to red. It produces yellow, green, or crimson flowers that bloom in the summer. Its name derives from the Greek and means "plant of the barbarians," because it is native to Tibet and China.
There are numerous species of rhubarb, the best known and richest in active ingredients is Chinese rhubarb ( Rheum palmatum ).
Rhubarb is used both ornamentally and medicinally, especially among Asian populations. In cooking, the stalks and fleshy leaf stalks are used; however, the leaves are not recommended due to their high oxalic acid content.
