According to the Mayan calendar, December 21, 2012 marks the end of the so-called fourth era.
The Mayan calendar is based on twenty-five different cycles: December 21, 2012, marks the beginning of a new cycle, but not necessarily the end of the world. The discovery of tablets bearing dates well after 2012 suggests that the Maya did not refer to this fateful day as humanity's last. For the Maya, the end of a cycle was an opportunity to celebrate the beginning of a new era: perhaps nothing will happen on December 21 because the change is already underway!
