De rode peper is een eenjarige plant die behoort tot de familie van de Solanaceae, dezelfde als aardappelen, aubergines, tomaten en tabak. Oorspronkelijk afkomstig van het Amerikaanse continent, werd hij naar Europa gebracht door Christoffel Columbus, bij zijn terugkeer van zijn tweede reis uit de Nieuwe Wereld.
Gebruik
Hij wordt zowel gekookt als rauw gebruikt, in pikante sauzen, en, als smaakmaker, op alle gerechten.
