De mosterd is afkomstig van een zeer wijdverspreide bergachtige kruidachtige plant genaamd Brassica nigra of sinapis, die spontaan groeit en zeer populair is in Europa, India en Sri Lanka. De vruchten zijn kleine glanzende bolletjes met een donkerrode of witgele kleur.
Gebruik
Het wordt gebruikt om zijn sterke, scherpe en zoetige smaak. Het dient om groentegerechten, vooral salades, op smaak te brengen.
