Sesam (Sesamum indicum L.) is een kruidachtige plant uit de familie Pedaliaceae, afkomstig uit India en Afrika, waarvan de zaden in de menselijke voeding worden gebruikt. Sesamzaadjes worden gedroogd of geroosterd bewaard; afhankelijk van de behandeling zullen de zaadjes een lichtere kleur of een donkerdere tint hebben. Sesam bevat geen gluten en is daarom perfect voor de bereiding van voeding voor mensen met coeliakie.
Gebruik
Het wordt gebruikt om zijn sterke, pittige en zoetige smaak. Het dient om groentegerechten, vooral salades, op smaak te brengen.
