Consuming a portion of legumes daily can lead to a remarkable and consistent weight loss. This wonderful discovery is revealed by a recent study from St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, which states that consuming about 130 grams a day (including peas, lentils, chickpeas, and beans) results in a daily weight reduction of 340 grams. However, the extraordinary properties of legumes do not end here: a previous analysis from the same Canadian hospital reveals that they help reduce the feeling of fullness by about 31% in individuals who regularly consume them, and they also manage to lower bad cholesterol levels by up to 5%.

Consuming a portion of legumes daily can lead to a remarkable and consistent weight loss.

The research in question was conducted on a sample of about 1000 people who, during the trial period, lost weight daily without excessive effort: it is therefore possible to reduce weight simply by adding legumes to one's diet, without the need to deprive oneself of anything. Almost all diets fail miserably because individuals tend to regain much of the weight lost, possibly due to a psychological aspect that increases hunger and cravings. According to the Canadian analysis, however, all the weight lost by consuming at least three portions of legumes weekly tends not to be regained. This latest finding further enhances the value of legumes, which, in light of this information, should be included in most diets aimed at weight loss. The Canadian study also revealed that legumes can be considered a complementary meal to a first course and a substitute for meals based on animal proteins: it is therefore advisable to alternate weekly meat consumption with portions of legumes.

Despite the significantly positive properties for our health, the average weekly consumption of legumes is well below the three portions recommended by the Canadian study. In Italy, the use of legumes in the daily diet is also below advisable levels. According to a recent estimate, only one in three Italians consumes them regularly. The common misconception about legumes is to think of them merely as a side dish to accompany main courses: nothing could be further from the truth. On the contrary, legumes effectively serve as a main dish and can effectively replace the protein intake from meat, which is excessively consumed on Italian tables. Legumes thus constitute a complete dish, and their importance is unfortunately still underestimated. In addition to the previously described properties, they hide another effect that directly impacts the metabolism of individuals who consume them regularly. They can indeed affect the glycemic load of the meal they accompany and even that of the subsequent meal: a surprising effect that influences weight loss and produces positive results regarding diabetes prevention.
